untethered.

when all that freedom doesn't feel like freedom.

someone asks,

what do you want to do now?

you don't know.

there is no one else's schedule

to consider.

no one waiting for you

to come home.

nothing you have to check

before you decide.

the answer can be

anything.

you still can't give one.

your life used to have

a radius.

you could move within it.

away from them.

back toward them.

the distance made sense

because there was a point

you were moving from.

then they died.

the point disappeared.

the distance didn't mean

anything anymore.

from the outside,

there are fewer limits.

you can make the decision.

you can change your mind.

you can go.

but having nowhere

you have to be

is not the same

as having somewhere

you want to go.

you thought a tether

was the thing

that kept you

from moving too far.

you didn't know

it was also the thing

that told you

how far away you were.

now there is no edge.

no point

you have to return to.

all that room

and you can barely move.
